The Corban's Story

Satisfaction Delivered... Twice

On December 26, 2009, Eugene Corban of Chatsworth, Illinois, took his wife Phyllis to the Emergency Department at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, after she began experiencing pain in her legs. While his wife was being triaged, Eugene and his grandson Jeremy waited in the Emergency Department's waiting room. After using the restroom, Eugene returned to the waiting area. Moments later, Jeremy witnessed his grandfather fall to the ground in apparent cardiac arrest.

"I called for help and started CPR," Jeremy said. "Seconds later, the Emergency Department staff rushed in, checked his vitals, and put him on a gurney."

The Emergency Department staff was able to resuscitate Eugene and stabilize his condition. Meanwhile, his wife was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is caused by a blood clot within a deep vein. Both Phyllis and her husband were admitted to the hospital for care.
 
While Phyllis was undergoing treatment for DVT, hospital staff kept her up-to-date on her husband's condition. Once Phyllis was able to leave her room, staff helped her visit Eugene who was located in the hospital's intensive care unit of the Comprehensive Care Center.

"It was a very scary situation to be in," Phyllis said. "At the time when everything happened, we were so lucky to be at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center."

Once Phyllis had completed treatment for DVT, she remained by her husband's side in the Comprehensive Care Center. After nine days of care, Eugene was discharged from the hospital and could finish his recovery at home with help from OSF Home Health. 

"This was so unexpected. It was a real eye-opener for the whole family. The care and compassion we received at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center was exceptional," Eugene said. "The staff was kind and meticulous in the quality of care they delivered regardless of what department we were in. We could not have asked for better care."
