Joint Replacement Center at OSF St.
Joseph Medical Center
The
Joint Replacement Center at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center
revolutionizes the way patients receive elective knee and hip
replacement surgery. The Center features dedicated private patient
rooms as well as exercise, therapy and dining areas.
Our staff, including physicians, nurses, nursing assistants, and
physical and occupational therapists, are highly trained in the care
of knee and hip joint replacement patients. Created with an atmosphere
of wellness, the Center was designed to accommodate our patients’
special needs. Care and activities are focused on meeting each
patient’s recovery goals and returning them to their home and routine
activities as quickly as possible.
Healing Together
The Joint Replacement Center features a group approach to care.
Each patient has a family member or friend designated as a “coach.”
Coaches play a key role in encouraging and supporting patients while
hospitalized and continue in that role upon their return to home.
The program provides a non-threatening environment, encouraging
patient independence and family participation, including education and
exercise, in a group format, and giving patients and families an
opportunity to form friendships with people in a similar situation.
Group
exercise helps patients realize what they are experiencing is a part
of the normal healing process. They work harder as a result of
friendly competition and encouragement from one another. They also
enjoy each other’s company and motivate in ways others cannot.
Enjoying meals as a group also allows for social interaction while
helping patients focus on returning to their normal lifestyle. Other
special amenities of the Center include wearing street clothes the day
after surgery, fresh flowers in each patient room and a complimentary
shampoo and hairstyle before being discharged so patients feel
pampered, refreshed, and ready to return to a normal life.
The Joint Replacement Center Experience
The Joint Replacement Center experience begins with a free
one-hour seminar on hip and knee pain, where joint sufferers can learn
about the causes and treatments for joint pain. At the end of each
seminar, participants may schedule an appointment with a physician
joint specialist to discuss their individual pain concerns.
Registration for the twice monthly seminars is through the Center for
Healthy Lifestyles by calling 309-661-5151.
If you and your physician joint specialist decide that joint
replacement surgery is necessary, you will be scheduled for a
pre-operative class where you will find out what to expect during your
hospital stay, begin to set your discharge goals, and meet fellow
joint replacement patients who are also scheduled for surgery.
Returning Home
Patients who have knee or hip replacement at the Joint Replacement
Center at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center are provided with the
necessary discharge instructions and information, as well as exercises
to make the transition from the hospital to home as seamless as
possible.
