Post-Partum Accommodations

After Delivery

Following the baby's birth, our patient and their new arrival will stay in one of our comfortable, private rooms. The newborn may stay with their mother as long as they desire.

Each post-partum room is equipped with Internet access, a keyboard, and monitor. Room Service from the hospital's kitchen is available between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. daily and is included in the room charge. Room Service is also available for support persons for a nominal fee.

After delivery, the Birthing Center staff encourages family interaction. The baby's grandparents, siblings, and visitors are welcome in the room.

A souvenir copy of the baby's birth certificate is provided, and, with his or her mother's permission, we will place a photo and announcement of the baby's arrival on our Web site for viewing by family and friends. To see pictures of babies born at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, please visit our online web nursery.

While You Recover

  • Breastfeeding basics are taught to each new mother by her primary care nurse, lactation counselor, or certified lactation consultants.

  • Certified lactation consultants, Sarah Musselman, RN, IBCLC, and Amanda Goff, RN, IBCLC, are available during your stay to answer questions and assess equipment and supplies. Sarah is also available for ongoing consultation on more difficult issues.

  • Referrals to other healthcare providers, if need for special circumstances, are also available.

Going Home

Before leaving the Birthing Center, moms will receive special instruction from our nurses, your obstetrician, and your baby's pediatrician; as well as literature on child care and development, breastfeeding, bottle feeding, and nutrition for the baby's immunizations. We know the first few days and weeks can be overwhelming, so we encourage new parents to call (309) 665-4703 at any time.

Breast Pumps and Accessories

Breast pumps and accessories may be purchased or rented from OSF Home Medical Equipment before leaving the hospital, eliminating the need for additional stops on the way home. OSF Home Medical Equipment is located on the ground level of the Center for Advanced Medicine, adjacent to the main hospital. The phone number is (309) 665-4765. The hours are: Monday through Thursday, 8 AM to 8 PM, Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and Saturday, 9 AM to 1 PM.

Breast Feeding Support Services

The Breastfeeding Support Services at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center can help new mothers adjust to feeding their babies while they are in the hospital and help is available to answer questions or concerns while they are breastfeeding at home. We help mothers and families initiate and maintain breastfeeding, providing the skills, confidence, and support they need for a successful experience.

Phone or outpatient consultations with a lactation consultant are available Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 3:30 PM. Appointments can be made by calling (309) 665-4704.
