Are You Dizzy?

Dizziness for some may mean lightheadedness, for others it may signify unsteadiness or loss of balance. Others report a spinning sensation, often referred to as vertigo.

What Causes Dizziness?

The most common cause of dizziness is a vestibular disorder, or problem with the inner ear. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common vestibular problem. Typically, patients report brief episodes of intense spinning with a change in position, usually upon lying down, looking up, or rolling over in bed. This form of dizziness is easily treated in one to two visits. Evaluation for other types of inner ear problems is also available.

Are You Headed for a Fall?

There are several known risk factors related to yourself, and your environment, that can increase your susceptibility of falling:

Symptoms of Dizziness or Unsteadiness

  • Taking one or more medications
  • Recent period of bed rest or inactivity
  • Loss of strength, or feeling in the legs or feet
  • Loss of confidence in your ability to get around
  • Environment, such as the surface you walk on, obstacles, lighting, etc.
  • Disease or injury impacting the balance system

How Do I Get Help?

Due to the complexity of balance control, not all balance problems are alike, making it difficult to determine the cause of a balance disorder and the appropriate treatment options. Significant advances have occurred over the past 20 years in the evaluation and treatment of balance disorders, and have been proven to be highly effective in offering relief. It is important you seek a medical professional who is qualified to diagnose and treat balance disorders. Ask your primary care physician, ENT doctor, neurologist, or physiatrist to refer you to the OSF Balance and Dizziness Center.

Treating and Evaluating Balance and Dizziness Problems

  • Audiologic assessment - evaluates hearing, health, and function of the inner ear.

  • Videonystagmography (VNG/ENG) - a series of tests used to evaluate the vestibular system.

  • Computerized Dynamic Posturography - identifies and differentiates between sensory and motor system impairments that control balance by gently changing, or moving a platform, or the surrounding visual environment.

  • Physical Therapy - assesses muscle and joint strength, movement, endurance, coordination, walking pattern, and daily activity functions.
