OSF Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine

Critical Care

The critical care specialty focuses on the most effective and efficient care possible for the critically ill patients in the Intensive Care and Post Intensive Care Units of OSF St. Joseph Medical Center's Comprehensive Care Center.

The Comprehensive Care Center has 32 private rooms housing state-of-the-art medical equipment specifically designed for the care of critical care patients.

The Highest Quality of Care When Time is Crucial
During rounds, a medical team consisting of critical care nurses and critical care physicians formulate care plans focusing on the clinical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of the critical care patient. The critical care medical team places great emphasis on the needs and expectations of the families. This is achieved with good communication between the critical care team and the family, along with additional support offered by pastoral care and social services.

There is also ongoing communication between the intensivist, critical care team, and primary care physician, as well as other consultants and allied medical professionals involved in the care of the critical care patient.

Intensivists Are Gold Standard for Critical Care
The care of each critical care patient is carefully and closely managed by a team of critical care intensivists, who are board certified physicians in pulmonology and critical care medicine.

Combined, the critical care team has more than 40 years of experience. Each member of the critical care team practices cutting edge medicine, which is evidence based, keeping in line with the national guidelines.

Pulmonary

The pulmonary specialty provides evaluation and care for patients with diseases of the lungs and the respiratory tract. Examples of pulmonary conditions include: shortness of breath, chronic cough, lung nodule, lung cancer, asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pulmonary hypertension, pleural effusion, interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, and respiratory failure.

OSF Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine physicians are highly trained to treat a wide-variety of pulmonary disorders.

Dr. Ravi Kashyap has a special interest in pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary nodules, while Dr. Kishore Karamchandani has a special interest in pleural effusion and interstitial lung disease. All of the OSF Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine physicians are board certified in pulmonology.

Continuity of Care When Quality of Life Matters
While many people associate continuity of care with primary care physicians, we believe continuity of care is important in the pulmonary clinic setting as well. Using the latest technology along with proven therapies and diagnostic techniques, the physicians of OSF Critical Care, Pulmonary, and Sleep Medicine all strive to help patients with chronic breathing and other pulmonary disorders to lead normal, active lives.

Sleep Medicine

Sleep is essential for a person's health and well-being. Yet millions of people do not get enough sleep and many suffer from a chronic lack of sleep. OSF St. Joseph Medical Center does not put an age on sleep disorders; we see toddler sleep disorders, sleep disorders in children, sleep disorders in adults, and sleep disorders in the elderly. Most individuals with sleep disorders go undiagnosed and untreated, leading to abnormal functioning in all of the systems of the body.

The sleep medicine specialty evaluates conditions characterized by disturbances of usual sleep patterns and disease states that cause sleep abnormalities. Examples of sleep disorders include: excessive sleepiness, snoring, obstructive/central sleep apnea, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, and narcolepsy.

Dr. David West has a special interest in all sleep disorders. Drs. West, Karamchandani, and Kashyap are board certified in sleep medicine.
