Quality of Care | Bar GraphThe U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Hospital Compare website allows you to compare the quality of care hospitals provide. This site also allows you to search by medical condition or surgical procedure.

  1. Click here; scroll down, and click "Find and Compare Hospitals."
  2. Choose a hospital based on zip code, city, state/territory, or county; then click "Continue."
  3. Choose general, medical condition, or surgical procedure search.
  4. Check the boxes next to the hospitals you wish to compare and click "Compare."

The Illinois Hospital Report Card

The Illinois Hospital Report Card website shows how well a hospital cares for its patients with specific conditions. This website uses data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

  1. Click here; search by region, zip code, or facility name.
  2. Check the boxes next to the hospitals you wish to compare.
  3. Click "Add to Comparison List."
  4. Under "My Facilities," click "Compare These Facilities."
  5. Select a measure for comparison or simply continue to click the over-arrow.

Leapfrog Group's Patient Safety Ratings

Quality of Care | ChartLeapfrog Group's Patient Safety Ratings website allows you to compare and view each hospital's progress toward meeting Leapfrog's standards. This site also allows you to search by medical treatment.

  1. Click here; search by city, state, zip code or hospital.
  2. Click "Compare Now."

Commonwealth Fund's "Why Not the Best?"

Commonwealth Fund's "Why Not the Best?" website offers the public comparative health care performance data. This site measures hospitals dependant on evidence-based care, patient experience, readmission, costs, and mortality rates.

  1. Click here; choose hospitals to compare by name or location.
  2. Check the boxes next to the hospitals you wish to compare and click "Continue."
  3. Choose benchmarks and click "Continue."
  4. Select "Create Report."

Consumer Reports' Hospital Ratings

Consumer Reports' Hospital Ratings website indicates how well a hospital follows the correct procedures to prevent infections. It also allows you to view each hospital's approach to treating serious chronic illness. Information at this site is only available to online Consumer Reports subscribers.  

  1. Click here; under "Quick Guide to Health Ratings," select "Hospitals."
  2. Select a state.
  3. Choose "Compare Illinois Hospitals."
  4. Check the boxes next to the hospitals you wish to compare and click "Compare."

HealthGrades

Quality of Care | Pie ChartHealthGrades offers access to patient safety ratings which allows you to see how well hospitals prevent avoidable complications following surgeries and procedures.

  1. Click here; select the state and city you wish to find data for.
  2. Click "Find Hospitals."
  3. Select a "Procedure/Diagnosis" or an "Award Recipient" category.
