Introduction & Overview
OSF St. Joseph Medical Center offers a full range
of inpatient and outpatient surgical services. Inpatient surgery is performed
24 hours a day, seven days a week in the medical center's new surgery wing.
When the original surgery area was built in 1968, it was not only adequate,
it was considered stateoftheart. Surgery has changed considerably
since then in terms of equipment used. When we added open heart surgery
to our services in 1990, two surgery rooms had to be combined into one
to accommodate the heartlung bypass machine, further reducing our
already cramped quarters.
In the mid1990s, we began considering our
options to update the surgery area, and building an addition was the only
viable choice. After nearly two years of planning and construction, the
new surgery wing opened in November 1997. The total square footage increased
from 5,530 to 25,000. The number of surgical suites remained the same at
five, but five holding bays and eight recovery rooms for pre and postoperative
care were added. The new wing also includes space for clean supplies and
equipment, an anesthesia storage and work area, and space for staff lockers,
lounges and call rooms. The new family waiting area is large and comfortable.
The new surgery wing is able to accommodate all
surgical specialties. The operating rooms are uniform in size and are all
multipurpose. Sterile corridors between the SurgiCenter and the new
surgery wing offer physicians and staff convenience and efficiency.
Outpatient surgery may be performed in the medical
center or in Eastland SurgiCenter, the area's first freestanding ambulatory
surgery center. Patients at the SurgiCenter recover in recliners and may
leave through a private "back door." Young patients always have
a private prep/recovery area, and adults have that option available. Patients'
families are kept informed of progress and are allowed in the prep/recovery
area as soon as the patient is out of anesthesia.
"Central Illinois
Firsts"
OSF St. Joseph has pioneered many medical advancements
to benefit central Illinois residents, among them the area's first successful
birth by cesarean section, nuclear medicine, hospital laser surgery. In
1990, OSF St. Joseph was the first hospital in McLean County to offer open
heart surgery and remains the only area provider of open heart services,
coronary angioplasty (balloon therapy) and a broad range of cardiac diagnostic
tests. For more information on procedures OSF St. Joseph
