Become a Patient Companion

Volunteer Services | Junior VolunteerPatient companions help prevent falls and provide friendship to patients determined to be at risk of falling or who need special assistance. The companion is expected to promote a safe environment while respecting the patient. The patient companion will watch the patient, calm the patient, provide diversional activities and call for help as needed. The companion might be asked to rock an infant or provide diversion to a child in the absence of parents at the bedside.

Our patient companions work in several departments throughout OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, including the Family Care Center, Transitional Care Unit, Ortho-Neuro, Comprehensive Care Center, and the Emergency Department.

Patient companion hours vary between an on-call and a regular schedule. There are weekday, evening and weekend hours available. Patient companions can work a maximum of four hours each shift.
